Online Learning – Update from Headteacher

January 2021

Dear Parents/ Carers,

Happy New Year to all.

I hope that you are well and managed to have a quieter, but still enjoyable holiday.

I want to update you on how online learning will look for children starting from Monday 11 January.

Each class will have a check in time with the class teacher every day at the same time. This will allow the teacher to complete the register and to give an outline of the planned activities for that day.

We understand that at times it may not be suitable for children to always join for the check in time but hope that they will be able to join at least a few times each week.

Primary 1-4 will have a check in at 9am

Primary 5 – will have a check in at 9.20am

Primary 6 and 7- will have a check in at 9.40am

All ASN classes- will have a check in at 9.20am

The check ins will be hosted through Google Meet and can be accessed by Google Classroom. There is a meet code for each class at the top of the coloured bar.

If you have any issues with access/ passwords please email Mr O’Donnelly to get the password reset.

Teachers are following government guidelines and are focusing on teaching 3 main curricular areas: literacy, numeracy and Health and Wellbeing

Tasks will be set out in the classwork area for specific groups and class activities.

Teachers will provide a short piece of feedback to children each day.

If a parent or child posts a message on the class stream you are reminded that all children in the class can see/ read the message.

If you wish to message you can send a private message to the teacher which only the person you are sending it to can read. Please remember that teachers will only respond between 9-3pm.

When the Google Meets are being hosted, they are recorded for safeguarding. The Meets are intended for children to meet with the teacher, please encourage your child to join independently. If a parent has a query please contact the class teacher or Senior Leadership team in the usual way.

Classes will follow their usual timetable in terms of what teachers they have.

We hope that as many children as possible can join our online learning and are looking forward to seeing children on screen on Monday morning.

If children are unwell, there is not an expectation for them to be joining the Google classroom during their illness.

Children of key worker’s/ vulnerable children who are in school will be working from our IT suite and accessing the same lessons as those at home.

As always, we want to support children and families in the best way possible and adhere to Council and Government guidelines.

If you are struggling with any issues please get in touch by emailing me

Keep safe and well,

Alison Hope.

Children of Key Workers Form – Message from SLC

Please find attached the form you must complete if you feel all parents/carers in the house are officially classified as Key Workers.

If this is the case, please have your child return the completed form to school on Thursday 7th January.

Definition of a key worker:

  • Health and Care workers directly supporting COVID response, and associated staff; Health and Care workers supporting life threatening emergency work, as well as critical primary and community care provision; Energy suppliers (small numbers identified as top priority already); staff providing support for childcare/learning.
  • All other Health and Care workers, and wider public sector workers providing emergency/critical welfare services (for example: fire, police, prisons, social workers), as well as those supporting our Critical National Infrastructure, without whom serious damage to the welfare of the people of Scotland could be caused.
  • All workers (private, public or third sector) without whom there could be a significant impact on Scotland (but where the response to COVID-19, or the ability to perform essential tasks to keep the country running, would not be severely compromised).

In order to be eligible to access childcare:

  • both parents must be keyworkers. (or, in the case of a single parent should meet criteria)
  • children should attend only when there are no alternative childcare arrangements

Google Classroom – Guide for Parents and Pupils

Please take some time to watch the attached video clip, which gives a good overview of how pupils and families can work Google Classroom at home. Please note that the email teacher function mentioned near the end is not available in South Lanarkshire schools. Instead, pupils and families can send the teacher a message using the Stream section, as outlined in the video.
